In a period from December 2017 to February 2018 the exhibition Being a Pupil in Croatia in the long 19th century, authored by Dinko Župan, was set in the elementary school in Donji Miholjac (December 2017 – January 2018) and elementary school “Dragutin Tadijanović” in Vukovar (January 2018).

The exhibition Being a Pupil in the Long 19th Century deals with diverse student practices and cultural and anthropological aspects of education such as student standard, student absence and illness, student discipline, class attendance, stay in the schoolyard, student games and free time activities, students working in the school garden, students’ practical training, students’ memories, journals, diaries and scrapbooks, building student subjectivity and identity (gender, social, religious, national, etc.), student mobility and discrimination against other students. The exhibition also deals with the social aspect of education (availability of primary, secondary and higher education, literacy and social stratification), the gender aspect of education (sexual division of schools and curricula), the intellectual aspect of education observed through education of gymnasium and university students, and ideologisation of education analysed through school ceremonies and rituals. In those days, as an important segment of the disciplinary society of the 19th century, the school system was intended to produce obedient citizens who should, within the whole society, unconditionally respect any ruling authority. Thus, the leading pedagogical authorities of the 19th century advocated that schools should primarily raise the future “tamed” and “obedient” citizens. At school, an image of the ruler as a loving father who takes care of everyone and everything was present- ed to children; the father who never makes mistakes and without whom the whole society would be exposed to insecurity and instability. Further, it was expected from male and female students to continuously respect and appreciate all ruling authorities.

Wishing to encourage closer examination of the impact crisis, conflicts and solidarity had on the education and schooling system, i. e. the discussion on the influence of the school system on the crisis management in the Croatian history, the project “From Proto-Modernisation to Modernisation of Croatia’s School System” initiated the panel session on the History of Schooling and Education at the Congress. The panel moderator was Dr. Vlasta Švoger.

Dr. Milan Vrbanus presented the project “From Protomodernisation to Modernisation of Croatia’s School System” (18th and 19th Century)”, conducted at Croatian Institute of History in Zagreb (HRZZ 4919,) its leader and associates, the expected objectives and results so far. A particular emphasis was placed on the database now accessible to general public (on the project website), that can be searched for information about Croatian students at the high schools of the Habsburg Monarchy and about professors and teachers from the continental Croatian area.

Prof. Mislav Gregl followed up with the lecture “From the school year 1809/10.”, interesting in the historical context of Napoleon’s actions in Croatian lands and in the social context of the struggle for establishment of either German or Hungarian as an official language. His presentation showed how useful school documents can be for completing the project base, but also how much the data available in the database, collected from numerous sources, may complete the picture of the activity of a certain academic institution.

Interested audience participated in the discussion after the lecture, the discussion that also went on further during the reception.

Dr. Dinko Župan

The program of the event included an exhibition of the photographs from the history of the school, the football match between pupils and teachers and a special program prepared by the pupils of the schools in Valpovo and Bocanjevci. As part of the event, team member dr. Dinko Župan gave a lecture titled “The Beginnings of Schooling in Bocanjevci”, presenting the interesting information on the earliest history of organized education in Bocanjevci.

The Lecture of Dr. Dinko Župan

On May 2nd 2016 the results of the project From Proto-Modernisation to Modernisation of Croatia’s School System were presented as part of the event. Dr. Dinko Župan gave a lecture titled Being a Student in the 19th Century, thus announcing the project’s academic conference and an exhibition which are to be held in May 2017 at the Croatian Institute of History and Croatian School Museum in Zagreb. Dr. Milan Vrbanus presented the project’s results, especially the databases on Croatian students at the higher schools in the Habsburg Monarchy and on teachers and professors of Croatia-Slavonia, the search of which is available as of May 1st 2016.

On April 23rd 2015 the elementary school Mijat Stojanović in Babina Greda celebrated its School Day and 240-years anniversary of the Schools in Babina Greda with the manifestation of the Open Doors Day.

Team member dr. Dinko Župan participated at the manifestation. Together with dr. Stanko Andrić, head of the Departement for the History of Slavonia, Srijem and Baranja of the Croatian Institute of History, dr. Župan promoted the book Mijat Stojanović – Sgode i nesgode moga života (published in Slavonski Brod, 2015.) and presented the published autobiography of Mijat Stojanović (1818-1881), teacher and writer from Slavonia.  Dr. Župan held a lecture on Stojanović’s biography.
