Presentation of the project results – Croatian School Museum, 22 February 2018

On Thursday, 22 February 2018 at Croatian School Museum our project team has presented the results of the project From Proto-Modernisation to Modernisation of Croatia’s School System in the period financed by the Croatian Science Foundation, 1 September 2014 – 28 February 2018. The presentation of the project results was accompanied by the exhibition “Being a Pupil in Croatia in the long 19th century” authored by our colleague Dinko Župan.

The speakers were Dr Štefka Batinić, Head of the Croatian School Museum, Dr Ivana Horbec from Croatian Institute of History, principal investigator of the project, Dr Vlasta Švoger from Croatian Institute of History, researcher on the project, and Dr Dinko Župan from Croatian Institute of History – Department in Slavonski Brod, author of the exhibition and a researcher on the project.

Following results were presented:

We have authored 42 research papers, of which 33 internationally peer-reviewed paper and 20 papers in English or German (17 papers are forthcoming)
We have published one editorial book and one book of archival sources
We held 33 presentations on international academic conferences, out of which 20 abroad (Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany and Spain)
We held 27 public lectures
We have analysed and presented archival sources that is essential for understanding the history of education and the creation of a (proto)modern system of the state controlled education
We have established a publicly available database on Croatian students at higher schools of the Habsburg Monarchy, as well as a database on professors and teachers. We have registered many students by the end of the 19th century on the faculties at the University of Vienna and the University of Budapest (i.e. earlier Trnava, Budim or Pest), many students of the University of Graz (specifically, students of all faculties until the end of the 18th century and students of Law faculties in the second half of the 19th century), as well as students of extra-university high schools, such as the Theresianum in Vienna, the Military academy in Wiener Neustadt, St. Augustin’s College in Vienna, Collegium Croaticum in Vienna, Engineering Academy in Selmecbánya, Technical College of King Josip in Budapest, as well as Royal Academies in Kolozsvár and Keszthely.

We have established an interactive map of schools in Croatia and Slavonia
We held an international conference on the subject “Being a Student in the Habsburg Monarchy” (Zagreb, 18-19 May 2017). The lecturers came from Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Russia, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Serbia.
We held a Doctoral workshop “Researching the History of Education: Material and Methodology” in cooperation with the Croatian School Museum
We have created and held two exhibitions – “The History of Schooling in Valpovština in the Long 19th Century” was set up in the Valpovština Museum in December 2016. It was the central exhibition in the Night of the Museums in 2017 in the Valpovština Museum, and in December 2017 it was included in the permanent exhibition of the Museum; and “Being a Pupil in Croatia in the Long Nineteenth Century”, presented for the first time during the international conference “Being a Student” in May 2017 at the Croatian Institute of History in Zagreb. It has since been held in the Slavonia Museum in Osijek, The City Library in Slavonski Brod; The City Library in Valpovo and the Elementary Schools in Donji Miholjac and Vukovar.
We established a section for the history of education and education at the 5th Congress of Croatian Historians (Zadar, 5-8 October 2017)
We have established a number of international contacts
